The Director of Operations is responsible for developing and applying consistently flawless production standards and practices that support all performance activities of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO), including performances by the CSO, Cincinnati Pops and May Festival, as well as electronic media and touring projects. Concert management is a major responsibility at the Orchestra’s primary venues of Music Hall and Riverbend Music Center. 

Reporting to the Vice President of Orchestra and Production, the Director of Operations oversees two Production Managers and five IATSE Stage Managers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Effectively manages stage operations for all productions to assure the highest artistic quality:

  • Schedules and supervises stage crew for all events in accordance with IATSE Local 5 collective bargaining agreement.
  • Coordinates production requirements for Orchestra performances and events.
  • Ascertains and implements needs of guest artists through contract riders and discussions with artists’ management.
  • Participates in negotiation of collective bargaining agreement with IATSE Local 5.
  • Supervises the maintenance and inventory of stage and production equipment.
  • Works closely with all departments to produce performances and develops and communicates accurate performance information, including: supervising concert production notes, weekly tech schedules, tech sheets, and stage plots
  • Collaborates and communicates with artistic leadership on staging needs and operations to render results of exacting standards.

 Secures and maintains optimal working conditions for all Orchestra services:

  • Supervises the planning of stage setups and environment to assure absolute accuracy and suitability for rehearsals and performances.
  • Works closely with the Director of Orchestra Personnel in responding to concerns and requests of Orchestra members to promote a positive relationship and culture between the Orchestra and management.
  • Coordinates inspection and assessment of offsite performance locations and tour sites in advance to determine suitability.

Assesses and secures all production components, ensuring required instruments and equipment are in place and prepared for all services to assure that the highest artistic standards can be met.
Develops and monitors the annual operating budgets for all direct, indirect and special project operations expenses.
Manages production elements for all electronic media activities:

  • Serves as recording session timekeeper to ensure adherence to all applicable AFM media agreements.
  • Coordinates television production crew schedules.
  • Works closely with the Director of Digital Content & Innovation on operational support for all media-related activities.

Plans all Orchestra services, in consultation with Vice President of Orchestra and Production and other production staff members, in compliance with the Local 1 collective bargaining agreement:

  • Supervises the creation and dissemination of all detailed rehearsal/performance schedules via hard copy and OPAS.
  • Assist the Vice President of Orchestra and Production in creatively executing and deploying the Orchestra calendar.

Books all rehearsal and performance spaces:

  • Acts as liaison with venue building management regarding booking for rehearsals and performances.
  • Communicates all rehearsal and performance production needs to Riverbend Music Center staff for summer concerts.

Liaises with building management regarding facilities issues.
Manage offsite warehouse operations and related landlord relationship.
Assists the Vice President of Orchestra and Production with tour planning and budgeting:

  • Works with agents to schedule and secure air/ground/hotel bookings.
  • Plans tour logistics for instrument and cargo transportation.
  • Travels with stage crew and manages concert operations on tour.
  • Organizes ground transportation for tour personnel on domestic tours.
  • Schedules advance tour visits to ensure optimal stage, travel and performance outcomes.

Requirements

This is an extraordinary opportunity for a mature leader with demonstrably successful orchestra production and/or stage/management experience. Successful candidates will also have experience successfully managing in a complex, incessantly paced organization with multiple programs, venues. entities and events.

Other qualifications include: 

  • Good knowledge of orchestral repertoire and performance practice.
  • Genuine interest in orchestral production.
  • Computer proficiency, including spreadsheets, stageplot/AutoCad software, word processing and email programs.
  • Experience with OPAS or other similar databases.
  • Experience successfully working both with collectively bargained and non-union employees.
  • Ability to work independently, set priorities, multi-task and use independent judgment while keeping supervisor informed of work activity, issues, and opportunities.
  • Experience working cross-departmentally with a variety of stakeholders including staff, volunteers, donors, guests artists, and contract technicians, all with the highest degree of professionalism, tact and clarity.
  • Proven effectiveness in problem-solving sound decision making.
  • Knowledge of piano maintenance
  • Knowledge of electronic media agreements.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, often with a high degree of ambiguity and adaptability changing situations and priorities and to meet multiple, critical deadlines and goals with consistent precision.
  • Ability and willingness to work outside traditional business hours (nights and weekends).
