The Major Gifts Officer is a full-time position, supporting the functions of The Washington Ballet Development Department through direct solicitation of individuals and corporate partners. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, well organized, and possess a sales mentality. This position requires excellent interpersonal skills, data-driven portfolio management, and the demonstrated ability to meet fundraising goals. Knowledge of customer relationship databases and appreciation for ballet is a plus.

Individual Giving / Major Gifts and Mid-Level Support (45%)

  • Manage a portfolio of 150 active individual and corporate accounts, responsible for $1 million in contributed revenue.
  • Develop and pitch major gift proposals for donors giving $10,000 to $100,000 annually.
  • Enhance the Balletomane Society membership program through targeted acquisition and cultivation plans for new and existing mid-level donors giving $2,500 to $9,999 annually.
  • Leverage in person and digital programming such as Studio Session rehearsals, Lunch & Learn series, Family Giving Circle series, and Barre Talk.
  • Create stewardship materials by working with a designer to generate impact reports, quarterly newsletters, and other collateral as needed.
  • Attend performances and Opening Night receptions with a view to donor strategy.

Corporate Giving / Sponsorships (45%)

  • Build a pipeline for Board of Ambassadors corporate giving program for those who can support
    the annual fund with a gift of $10k+.
  • Develop proposals for 10k+ funders according to their passions and interests, and match to
    priority needs such as artistic/production underwriting, student scholarships, community
    engagement, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) initiatives.
  • In coordination with the Director of Government Affairs, Advancement and Community, manage
    existing corporate relationships and deliver benefits through stewardship plan and leverage
    private events held at private homes, embassy partners, and businesses.
  • Identify, cultivate, and solicit sponsorship for annual special events: Season Opening Celebration,
    The Nutcracker Tea Party, and Annual Gala.

Prospect Research / Data Management (10%)

  • Research and qualify donors from current membership programs;
  • Wealth screen potential new donors from performance and special event ticket buyers, school parents and alumni and develop contact lists;
  • Pull reports to track progress to revenue goals and review portfolio next steps on a weekly basis;
  • Record donor touchpoints into the Patron Manager database.


Skills and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree (Graduate degree preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience and success in fundraising with a minimum of three years experience.
  • Ability to set goals strategically and oversee execution.
  • High level of discretion and ethical approach to fundraising.
  • Proven ability to interact and influence philanthropic leaders.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with internal and external constituents.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in database management, Microsoft Office Suite, and other computer skills.
